Recreation Opportunities in Wisconsin's County Forests

Hiker Crossing a StreamWisconsin’s County Forests provide a multitude of recreational opportunities. There are more than 2.4 million acres available to the general public to use for a variety of recreational pursuits.

Cross-Country Skier)Pick your favorite spot in Wisconsin to vacation. Chances are there is a county forest nearby. Check in with the County's Forest Administrator before leaving home and receive a wealth of information – maps, areas to hunt, where to fish, trail locations – the material that is available is quite extensive. You will also learn that certain activities are not allowed or appreciated. For instance, because these forests are open to all the public, hunters may not erect permanent tree stands. You will receive all the rules and regulations, fees for camping or using the trails, and information about what is or is not allowed in that particular forest when you contact the County's Forest Administrator.

Wisconsin's 2007-09 biennial budget bill includes language providing for a 2-year pilot project allowing Light Utility Vehicles "LUVs" to travel on designated ATV trails and routes in 8 counties. Decisions to participate in the program were made at the local, county level. More information on the pilot program and which counties are participating in the program can be found here.

You are welcome to use the county forests for fun and recreation. All we ask is:

  • Carry it in, carry it out; don't litter,
  • Find and follow regulations, and
  • Do no damage.

Some activities that take place on County Forests include:

•  Hunting and fishing
