Position Description


Position: Forester I

Department: Forestry Department

Location: Iron County Forestry Department

Reports To: Forest Administrator


Purpose of Position: Position assists the County Forest Administrator in the management of the Forest and the timber sales program on County Forest Lands, and performs advanced forester duties. In addition the position is responsible for developing current status reports, long range strategies and goals, and research plans for the management of lands in the County Forest.

Required Knowledge and Experience: A bachelor of science degree in Forestry, Forest Science, or Forest Management form a college that is accredited by the Society of American Foresters and at least two years of forestry related work experience. Knowledge of: silvicultural systems and management practices for timber types native to Northern Wisconsin, current cruising and forest mensuration techniques, logging practices commonly utilized in the Lake States, wild land cadastral surveying techniques, basic forest insect and disease control techniques, multiple use land management concepts, and record keeping techniques including GPS and GIS. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally, and in writing, and to deal with people effectively. Must be capable of performing vigorous outdoor work in adverse weather conditions. Must possess a valid Wisconsin Drivers License, or be able to obtain one within 30 days of hiring.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Preparation of Timber Sales:

    • Locate, appraise, map and prepare timber harvesting plans for Iron County Forest Lands, and other forested lands owned by Iron County.

    • Utilize Iron County Forest Compartment Reconnaissance data to plan timber harvesting activities, and to update recon data for areas where harvesting has been completed. Update county recon data utilizing GIS.

    • Organize and direct timber sale preparation work done by other Forestry Department employees.

    • Locate and mark forest boundary lines when necessary to delineate timber sale or County Forest boundaries using current GPS and GIS techniques.

    • Mark trees to be harvested in all-aged silvicultural harvest systems.

    • Prepare and record timber sale record documents required for sale reporting to the D.N.R. Division of Forestry.

  • Timber Sale Administration:

    • Visit and inspect ongoing and completed timber sales for compliance with timber sale contract conditions.

    • Meet with loggers to discuss and resolve minor timber sale problems.

    • Report major timber sale problems to Forest Administrator for further action.

    • Prepare and record reports for timber sale inspections.

    • Meet with loggers to show them unsold timber sale tracts, assist with road layout, and for mandatory pre-sale meetings.

  • Other Duties:

    • Assist with other department projects when additional personnel are temporarily needed to complete them.

    • Map and estimate equipment and personnel needs for various timber stand improvement projects on county lands.

    • Layout and map the location of trails and roads on County Forest lands using GPS and GIS equipment and techniques.

    • Cooperate with and assist the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with forest fire prevention and suppression work in the county forests during periods of high forest fire danger.

    • Attend training sessions and professional meetings as approved by Forest Administrator. Other duties as assigned by Forest Administrator or Forestry Committee.
