DESCRIPTION: Assist in the day to day operations of the Bayfield County Forest and Parks Department.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Below are examples of the principal responsibilities of the position. Other forest and park management duties may be assigned or required.
Primary (In order of importance or as directed by forest administrator).
- Timber sale establishment: including reconnaissance, prescription development, sale layout,
cruise design, timber marking, timber sale write up, reforestation planning and timber sale
administration.
- Forest compartment and stand inventory.
- Assist in forest regeneration activities and conduct regeneration surveys, including assisting
County and DNR personnel in prescribed burning.
- Maintenance and development of the department's GIS database.
Other Duties (No specific order of importance)
- Assist in the development of the department's annual and long term plans.
- Assist in the maintenance of the annual goal tracking database.
- Maintain accurate forest records, both computerized and hard copies.
- Assist in forest recreation and wildlife habitat planning and development.
- Assist in the coordination and enforcement of timber sale contracts, as well as, County forest
and park policies, regulations and ordinances.
- Assist in the operation of County parks and campgrounds.
- Assist in the preparation of specifications for equipment and other purchases for presentation
to the forest administrator.
- Work with State, Federal and other agencies in order to achieve maximum program
objectives.
- Prepare and present material at conferences, meetings or school/local functions.
- Assist In planning and negotiating access permits and easements to County property.
- Collect forest land and campground revenues and all applicable fees and rents.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of forest management activities and make recommendations to
the forest administrator.
- Assist in the development of land and resource management plans, including the
development of standards and guidelines.
- Make reports to the Forestry Committee, as needed.
- Assist in the maintenance of County facilities and equipment. This includes a variety of labor
tasks and equipment operations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry from an accredited University or College
of Forestry is required. A Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Resources, with a minimum of 5
years professional forestry field experience may be considered.
- Experience working in northern timber types preferred.
- Experience working with CIS systems (ArcView) and spreadsheets preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of terrain and weather conditions.
- Valid Wisconsin driver's license or ability to transfer a valid license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to perform extended periods of physical labor including, but not limited to, walking,
lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, sitting, and standing.
- Heavy to moderate lifting and carrying of up to 50 Ibs.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions including sun, wind, rain and snow.
- Distance vision and depth perception to perform the job safely.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of professional land management principles, practices, and concepts.
- Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding forest management.
- Working knowledge of silviculture, dendrology, mensuration, tree physiology, forest
entomology, forest pathology, reforestation methods, timber stand improvement, sustainable
forest management principles and techniques, and timber harvest systems, with emphasis on
northern forest types.
- Working knowledge of the interrelationships of physical and biological factors and their
various influences on the type and timing of silvicultural treatments.
- Knowledge of multiple use management and the recreational uses of forests and parks.
- Working knowledge of global positioning equipment (GPS), ArcView and CIS data
management and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Working knowledge of basic surveying principles and techniques.
- Knowledge of forest transportation planning and logging road layout.
- Possess or have the ability to acquire basic wildland firefighting qualifications.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather; work independently and as part of a group.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact with diverse public groups, State, Federal and local governmental agencies
and a multicultural work force in an effective, collaborative manner.
- Ability to operate modern office equipment including personal computers, copiers and
telephone systems with minimal guidance.
- Able to operate ATV's and snowmobiles.
