Lincoln County
Forest Acreage
With almost
99,000 acres Lincoln County has the 11TH largest of Wisconsins County
Forests. Of this there are approximately 79,000 acres of forest and approximately
19,000 acres of non-forest cover, including grassy areas, lakes, streams, muskeg bogs and
lowland brush.
Of the forest cover approximately:
- 39,000 acres are in aspen types
- 28,500 acres of hardwood types
- 7,000 acres of lowland conifer types and
- 4,500 acres of upland conifer types.
The forest is divided into three forest units.
- The Harrison Forest Unit is located on the eastern
side of the county. The area of this unit is comprised mostly of the Harrison and
Underdown Hills, which are typical morainic hills and ridges interspersed with many bogs,
swamps, ponds and small kettle lakes. Hardwood forest types with some areas of aspen and
other types cover the majority of this region of the forest.
- The Somo/Wilson Forest Unit is located in the
northwest part of the county. This is an area of elongated drumlins and low recesssional
moraines segmented by drainage valleys of bogs and swamps. The Somo/Wilson Unit has large
areas of sandy soils and is where the majority of the pine plantations will be found.
- The Harding/Tomahawk Forest Unit is located in the
west-central section of the county. This unit is level with a few morainic mounds that are
slightly higher than the plain. This area has many drainageways and wet basins. Aspen
cover-types are the major forest types with scattered conifer and hardwood types in this
unit.
